For example consider three in their historical context and the Bible references.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Water Cycle\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The first published thinker to assert that rainfall alone was sufficient for the maintenance of\u00a0rivers\u00a0was\u00a0Bernard Palissy\u00a0(1580 CE), who is often credited as the &#8220;discoverer&#8221; of the modern theory of the water cycle.<\/p>\n<p>However, the &#8220;water cycle&#8221; and the impact of rain and ocean levels is seen in multiple places in scripture.<\/p>\n<p>The prophet Amos declared, <em>&#8220;<span id=\"en-NIV-22432\" class=\"text Amos-5-8\">He&#8230;<\/span><span class=\"text Amos-5-8\">who calls for the waters of the sea\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Amos-5-8\">and pours them out over the face of the land<\/span><\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<span class=\"indent-1\"><em><span class=\"indent-1-breaks\">\u00a0<\/span><\/em><span class=\"text Amos-5-8\"><em>the\u00a0<span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span>\u00a0is his name.&#8221;<\/em> (Amos 5:8 NIV)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;All streams flow into the sea, yet the sea is never full. To the place the streams come from, there they return again.&#8221;\u00a0<\/em>(Eccl. 1:7 NIV)<\/p>\n<p><em><span id=\"en-NIV-13764\" class=\"text Job-36-27\">\u201cHe draws up the drops of water,\u00a0<\/span><\/em><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Job-36-27\"><em>which distill as rain to the streams.&#8221;<\/em> (Job 36:27 NIV)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Flat Earth or Round Earth?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While many believed the earth was flat,\u00a0<strong>\u00a0Eratosthenes,<\/strong> a Greek astronomer from Hellenistic Libya (276\u2013194 BC), estimated Earth&#8217;s circumference around 240 BC. He had heard that in Syene the Sun was directly overhead at the summer solstice whereas in Alexandria it still cast a shadow.<\/p>\n<p>We read in scripture of the observations of Solomon the wise:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;The\u00a0wind\u00a0blows to the south and turns to the north; round and round it goes, ever returning on its course.&#8221;<\/em> (Eccl. 1:6 NIV)<\/p>\n<p><em><span id=\"en-NIV-18443\" class=\"text Isa-40-22\">&#8220;He sits enthroned\u00a0above the circle of the earth,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Isa-40-22\">and its people are like grasshoppers.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/em><span class=\"text Isa-40-22\"><em>He stretches out the heavens\u00a0like a canopy&#8230;&#8221;<\/em> (Isaiah 40:22 NIV)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Gyroscope&#8230;Key to navigation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Historically,\u00a0The first instrument used more like an actual gyroscope was made by\u00a0Johann Bohnenberger\u00a0of Germany, who first wrote about it in 1817. At first he called it the &#8220;Machine&#8221;. Bohnenberger&#8217;s machine was based on a rotating massive sphere.<\/p>\n<p>As the prophet Ezekiel received a vision of the four angelic creatures, we read this description.<em> &#8220;<span id=\"en-NIV-20481\" class=\"text Ezek-1-16\">Each appeared to be made like a wheel intersecting a wheel.<\/span>\u00a0<\/em><span id=\"en-NIV-20482\" class=\"text Ezek-1-17\"><em>As they moved, they would go in any one of the four directions the creatures faced; the wheels did not change direction\u00a0as the creatures went.&#8221;<\/em> (Ezekiel 1:6,7 NIV)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>While the Bible is not a book of scientific discovery, we see the God who is all powerful, creator, the &#8220;only wise God.&#8221; Knowing God is the greatest discovery. The prophet speaks of a future day, <em>&#8220;They will neither harm nor destroy on all my holy mountain, for the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the LORD as the waters cover the sea.&#8221;<\/em> (Isaiah 11:9 NIV)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It is interesting to find references to science-based discoveries in the pages of the Bible.
